Home Remedy for Flu
How are you preparing for the flu season? Discover what home remedy for flu works best.
Prevent the flu with an immune system booster
It's easier to prevent than to treat. The only mean of prevention and defense against flu is our own immune system. With a strong immune system you will get more chances of fighting against viruses.
Even if you catch the flu, it will be a lighter form and you will recover in less time.
Also, fruits contain many vitamins, especially vitamin C, very important in fighting viruses.
Garlic is probably the best known home remedy for flu.
Eat 1-2 cloves of crushed raw garlic daily in order to reduce chances of influenza. Besides the effect of strengthening the immune system, garlic contains more than 20 antiviral and antibacterial agents that destroy or slow the pace of growth of the bacteria and influenza viruses.
I tell everyone I know about the health benefits of garlic every chance I get. You can make a tasty garlic dressing or just mince it and put it in your meals.
Some people experience stomach heartburn and you may have a problem with garlic breath, but no rose is without thorns.
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is another home remedy for flu that has several compounds with strong antiviral effects. Basil prevents flu complications, reduces discomfort during the disease (dizziness, headache, cough).
It also has an antiseptic action (it prevents bacterial infections during flu) and expectorant properties.
Drink 3-4 cups of hot basil tea per day. Add 2 drops of essential basil oil in each cup.
Even if you've caught the flu, these herbs can help you. It is common sense for all your family to take an immune system booster because even if you are protected, they can still get the flu from you.
Flu symptoms - Fever
When your antibodies fight infection, the body temperature will rise. Fever actually helps because the bacterial cell metabolism and viral reproduction slows down if the temperature rises.
Unfortunately, high fever affects the metabolism of your own cells too. This is why you have to take decisive measures to lower the temperature, before it gets too dangerous.Elder flowers (Sambucus nigra) have diaphoretic properties (they help your body sweat).
They lower your body temperature and makes your body sweat a lot. Make a tea from 2 teaspoon of elder flowers in 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 3-4 cups daily.
Swedish bitter is great for fever . It is best to take it early in onset of fever.
Put half a teaspoon up to a teaspoon of bitter in a glass of water and drink throughout the day. Repeat every 3 hours.
Bitter is a great home remedy for flu because it releases the airways gradually, reduces inflammation and sore throat, eases breathing and reduces temperature. As a bonus, Swedish bitter will also boost your immune system.
Flu symptoms - Pain, headaches, muscle aches
White Willow (Salix alba) is rich in salicilin, a cousin of aspirin. It brings down fever and inflammation, is anesthetic, antispasmodic and sedative.
Make an infusion from 1 teaspoon of willow bark in 1 cup of water. Drink 3 cups per day.
Gentian also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used in any treatment for infections.
With its antibiotic properties, gentian can be used both internally (infusion) and externally (massage with essential oil). It strengthens the immune system and clears the inflamed and irritated airways.
Flu symptoms - CoughThe whole flu symptoms picture wouldn't be complete without cough.
Dry cough. Antitussives (also called cough suppressants) tell your brain to stop coughing.
If you have dry cough drink an herbal tea with an emollient plant like Plantain leaf (Folium Plantaginis), Coltsfoot's flowers and leaves (Flores et Folium Farfarae) or Linden flowers (Flores Tiliae).
Cough with phlegm. Don't take an antitussive if you're coughing up mucus. Expectorants herbs will help thin mucus so it can be coughed up more easily.
Cowslip (Primula officinalis) flower tea is such an expectorant herb. It also has active substances that will release and decongest the airways.

Flu symptoms - Fight infections with antibiotic and antiseptic herbs
Usually we don't take antibiotics for cold or flu, because antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses. But, in case your doctor will discover bacterial infection, he will probably recommend antibiotics.
Thyme is extremely beneficial for colds and flu. Thimol, thyme's active substance acts as a natural antiseptic.
Drink 2-3 cups of thyme tea per day.
As you can see, there are natural flu remedies both for preventing and for treating the symptoms.
Take additional precautions with children and always ask your doctor’s advice on home remedy for flu.
