Extended Breastfeeding

By Paula

I was a huge fan of breastfeeding even before I got pregnant. This is why I decided to gather all information I could find about advantages of breastfeeding, extended breastfeeding and fertility herbs.

Breastfeeding is a natural and incredibly healthy way to start your baby's life. It provides vitamins and minerals that no synthetic formula can provide. And it doesn't take a master of nursing programs degree to know this because it's basically second nature for any mother. extended-breastfeeding

Sometime it is not enough to wish, and you have to help the nature a bit. I didn’t give up when a friend told me that she quit, she tried all, but she had to give the baby powdered milk.

During pregnancy I was often told not to be angry. This observation is stil valid during breast-feeding.

The state of mind of the mother is sent to the baby through milk. So I complied and tried as much as possible to sleep and stay calm.

Nutrition
During confinement, nutrition should contain a lot of drinks. I drank 1 liter of milk and 1/2 liters of yogurt a day, compotes, tea, soups, plain mineral water.

During nursing, I discovered muesli cereals. I didn’t eat muesli before then and I felt an increase in my milk output after a cup of yogurt with muesli.

I couldn’t believe it, but the difference was obvious. I told a friend who was nursing also and she told me: "Yeah, my lactation is stimulated when I eat peanuts and pistachios."

Lactation tea for extended breastfeeding
I bought lactation tea from my local herbs store. It has anise fruits (Fructus Anisi), fennel fruits (Fructus Foeniculi), caraway fruits (Fructus carvi), nettle (Urticae Herba), melissa leafs (Folium Melissae ), wild thyme (Herba Serpilli), peppermint (Herba menthae).

The active substances from the tea are passing in the milk and soothe the digestive disorders of the baby such as: colic, cramps or abdominal pain.

Many galactagogue teas have in their composition anise, fennel and caraway used from ancient times to stimulate lactation.

Other breastfeeding herbs are also indicated in this period: Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), Dill (Anethum graveolens) and Carrot (Daucus carota).

Dill
For pregnant women or those breast feeding, dill is recommended because it enhances the vitality and the general tonus, it increases the appetite, it stimulates lactic secretion and improves milk quality. Dill also helps the baby to get rid of colic.

For an extended breastfeeding, phytotherapists recommend infusion of dill seeds to stimulate lactation. How it is made? Put a spoon with ground dill seeds in a cup of boiling water. Cover and leave 15-20 minutes to infuse. Strain and drink warm, a small cup three times a day.

You can make a decoction from half of a teaspoon of dried and shredded plant in a cup of water. Boil for 15-20 minutes.

Carrots for extended breastfeeding
Carrots not only stimulate lactation, but have a role in improving the quality of the milk. I met mummy friends very pleased with the carrot juice during lactation.

Hop tea is also galactogogue.
In the maternity, a neighbour mummy, which gave birth to her second child, praise she knew a magic formula to stimulate lactation. Her recipe was ... beer, cheese and onions.

I didn’t dare to drink beer :).
