Constipation in Toddlers
My daughter, Roxana, suffered from constipation from an early age. This problem seemed to be her shadow, so we couldn't have missed the constipation in toddlers episode.
Along with solid food, we made first acquaintance with diarrhea. While we were trying to get rid of it, we run into constipation. Weaning was another confrontation with constipation in toddlers.
When she turned 2 years old I decided she was big enough to let go of the nursing bottle. She cried for it and she no longer wanted to drink milk, tea or water in any other container.
Before letting go of the nursing bottle she drank about 1 l of liquids per day - milk, tea, juice or water. Afterwards, she barely moistened her lips with water.
Before this episode, when she was constipated, she had a bowel movement once a week. This time she didn't use the toilet for 10 days in a row, twice. Every time she had a bowel movement she avoided the toilet because it was so painful.
We tried glycerine suppositories and Vaseline, but she stool was too big and hard and the poor little thing was crying every time we tried to help her get it out.
I made her fruit juice, but she didn't want to drink it. Pear and carrot juice
saved us many times before, but now I had to find something else. I thought I can trick her with smoked prunes cake
, dried apricots
, but she didn't even taste them.
sweetened with honey would have helped her, but Roxana didn't drink this either.
I finally decided to go see the pediatrician. I was hoping to recommend us some natural toddler constipation remedies.
The salvation came from elsewhere though. At the nursery, while I was talking with some moms about constipation in toddlers, one of them told us that she finally solved the problem with Lingonberry
(Vaccinium vitis-idaea) shoots extract
The treatment for toddlers is 25 drops (1 ml), 2 times daily in a little water between meals. The treatment lasts for up to 3 months, then take a break for 1-2 months, and you can resume.
I followed the instructions to the letter :) and after 2 weeks, we were back on the track. Meanwhile I also found a toddler cup she accepted to drink from, and she returned to her daily portion of fruit juice.
This episode of constipation in toddlers was very distressing for my daughter, and frustrating for us because we didn't know what else we could do to help her.
Now it's all sunshine and roses for us :)More natural remedies for constipation
